Can someone give me an unbiased overview of the 30 Years War?

I want to know more about the 30 Years War. I know how it was originally a Civil War between Catholic and Lutheran German Princes, then the two sides got allies from countries of the same religion. Then didn't the war become more political than religious? Catholic countries fought with the Protestants for political reasons, and vice versa? I just want to know what it was about, the time line, and what was the aftermath, from a neutral point of view.
