Why was the flag that the earthquake survivor carrying upside down?

I noticed during the opening ceremony that the young earthquake survivor with Yao Ming was carrying a PRC flag on a stick, yet the flag was upside down. Was that on purpose? It seems odd that with all of the preparations they would miss that.
